Tom Geppi, president of EnviroCycle paper, displays his products.

While some talk about the environment, EnviroCycle is doing something about it.

The now year-old local business, EnviroCycle, offers Rhimax, a multi-use organic paper that can be used as a red rosin alternative, for landscaping, gardening, painting, garage work or at the front door, and in automobiles for trampling.

Flooring companies also use Rhimax paper as an underlay and it is being marketed to wineries for bottle labels, said Tom Geppi, president of EnviroCycle Paper Products.

"It's durable, eco-friendly and meets all the requirements to be labeled officially 'green'," Geppi said. "It's a completely organic solution for weed, temperature and moisture control and soil enhancements."

Geppi said the paper replenishes the soil as it biodegrades and prevents soil erosion. For farmers and growers, it's a cost-effective, convenient alternative to plastics and woven mats, he said.

"We designed a completely green manufacturing process that begins with 100 percent post-consumer, organic waste," Geppi said.

The multi-use paper is certified organic by the Organic Materials Review Institute, Geppi said. It is developed through a chemical-free production process, yielding zero environmental discharge, he said.

Compared to other products that break down partially, Rhimax paper breaks down completely after it is used, Geppi said.

"The green movement is big on the West Coast. It's now getting a foothold across the country. We feel lucky to be a part of it."

Rhimax paper is being distributed by Easy Gardener Products under the brands WeedBlock Biodegradable Mulch and Landmaster Biodegradable Paper Mulch.

The products are produced in convenient three foot by 50 foot rolls, making it adaptable to any size landscape, hardscape or garden project, said Ryan Gillet, EnviroCycle vice president.

"The products provide lasting weed and moisture control, while ensuring long-term soil development as the eco-friendly paper mulch biodegrades," Gillett said.

Envirocycle's Frederick office is at 147 W. Patrick St., phone, 240-446-7010; website, www.enviro-cycle.net.

Renewable weed control product uses new fibre

Substantially reduced environmental footprint

After three years of intensive development work with US-based NatureWorks LLC, Easy Gardener has succeeded in creating the world's first weed control product made from renewable resources. Unlike its entirely oil-based predecessors, 70% of WeedBlock(r) Natural is made from the new Ingeo(tm) fibre, which is derived from 100% annually renewable resources.

The best that technology currently offers, this innovative new development will allow the consumer the option to use a weed control product with a substantially reduced environmental footprint, without sacrificing the high performance that has become synonymous with Easy Gardener's WeedBlock(tm) brand.

As well as eco credentials, WeedBlock(r) Natural excels at preventing weeds, allows water through to the soil beneath and is guaranteed to last over ten years.

It is WeedBlock(r) Natural's use of Ingeo(tm) fabric that makes this product unique. Ingeo(tm), that means ingredients from the Earth, is a nature-based fiber derived entirely from more sustainable agricultural resources like corn. Created from NatureWorks(r) polymer - the most reduced greenhouse gas plastic polymer commercially available - Ingeo(tm) is the world's first man-made fiber derived entirely from a 100% annually renewable resource, rather than from our limited petroleum deposits.

WeedBlock(r) Natural costs £14.95 for a 12m x 0.9m roll and is currently available through B&Q stores. However, it will also be available at several garden centres and independent stockists later in the season.

 Latest environmental developments with NatureWorks

The NatureWorks(R) Polymer Newsletter

Ingeo™ and NatureWorks® Earth Month 2007

For the first time, the NatureWorks® polymer and Ingeo™ fiber brands will be brought together in an event celebrating environmental stewardship. Ingeo and NatureWorks Earth Month 2007 will kick off on April 22, 2007, which is Earth Day in the United States, and will end on World Environment Day, June 5, 2007. Partners from around the globe will be participating by highlighting green initiatives including how packaging and products made from NatureWorks polymer and Ingeo fibers are environmentally responsible choices.

NatureWorks LLC, along with our partners, will also be hosting, sponsoring and participating in events around the globe to promote innovation and the choice of green alternatives to everyday living.

Wedding Dress Made of Ingeo™ Fibers Debuts at the International Agrofood Forum

Coldiretti, an Italian association that represents Italian farmers, organized an international forum in Cernobbio, Italy (October 20-21, 2006) focusing on innovations in agriculture and environmental stewardship. The discussion included leaders in the fields of agriculture, industry, and commercial distribution as well as consumer leaders, scientists and international economists.

NatureWorks LLC was invited to represent the ultimate innovation — the use of biopolymers in contemporary life. Commercial products made with Ingeo™ fibers and NatureWorks® polymer were displayed in a "Gallery of Innovation," an open space furnished as a real house that represented the eco-house of the future.

NatureWorks LLC presented the first wedding dress made of Ingeo™ fiber created by the Italian designer Franco Francesca. The dress, the focal point of the gallery, caught the attention of the visitors, international press and television stations.

"Smart Care" for 2007

First launched in May 2006, the Smart Care program has helped our many partners with information to educate and inform the supply chain on how best to manage packaging and other materials made from NatureWorks® polymer — throughout the shipping, storage and handling process. With warm weather just around the corner for many parts of the globe, now is a good time to revisit these supply chain practices and how Smart Care can help in the successful delivery of products and packaging made from NatureWorks polymer.

Did you know?

OVAM and IFEU, two independent outside institutions, recently concluded new Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) assessments of products made from NatureWorks polymer. OVAM's study focused on drinking cups commonly used at large and small scale events, while IFEU's study compared food packaging, a produce clamshell, made from NatureWorks polymer to alternative plastic materials.

These studies along with related summaries and presentations were recently posted on NatureWorks LLC's corporate website.
